Taking risks and telling boring stories

I spent much of Friday and Saturday trying to find insurance for this trip. Visiting travel agents, reading policies, ringing up brokers, scouring websites. No one seemed to want to insure someone either on a motorbike above 125cc, or above 3000m. Both of which I will be doing.

A lot of people have told me to stay safe whilst away. Don't do anything risky. But in some ways that is exactly why I am doing this. It is when we do something dangerous that we become most alive, when faced with death that we really become present, when we look into darkness that we become mist aware of the light.

I finally bought my insurance this morning off a very nice man called Mike at a re-assuringly substantial and non risky sounding company called Campbell Irvine. I am now insured to do Evil Knievel stunts of Everest should I so desire.

So I say all that about taking risks and feeling alive and all that jazz but really I intend to stay safe, come home in one piece, older, wiser and with a lot of boring stories that no one really wants to hear.
